It was just another Bangsar TM club meeting. Same ‘regular faces’, same ‘handful members’, doing the same things like we always do, and like always enjoyed doing what we always do!

The enthusiasm was very evident. At 6.30 pm it was just the President. At 6.35 VPE & VPPR were on the scene. At 6.40 SAA walked in, with the Secretary coming in couple of minutes later... they all took their time, slowly walking in. While everyone enjoyed the refreshments they had ordered, 2 of my 4 guests joined the group. Daniel (CC,CL) from Hungary and Roy (looking for a club to join) completed the attendance – 9 members, 2 guests.

Did we have fun? We sure did. Daniel wanted to know how we did it – small numbers, lots of fun. Positive attitude! Good speeches, encouraging evaluations; entertaining table topics; some doing their roles for the first time, some doing multiple roles. Just to remind you, the early birds don’t wait for the late comers. First come first served – if you had volunteered for a role but didn’t arrive before the meeting started, someone will take over the role, and don’t expect to be assigned the role you had volunteered after you walk in. It is taxing, but the show must go on, and no disrupts.

The President, as always added a twist to the introductions – taking advantage of the theme, “MAKE A FRIEND”, everyone had to introduce the member sitting next to. This can be challenging – if you don’t know the members.

Sham Sunder’s table topics were simple, with lots of opportunities to express one-self. The evaluation of the table topics speakers by Mooi Kheng Lim, CC, (her first time) was very precise. She charmed her way through with her smiles.

After a 12-minute-break, we were entertained by 3 speakers:

Anita, (basic manual #2), with “Advantages & Tips of being organised and on time”, evaluated by guest Toastmaster, Daniel. Anita had lots of tips to share.

Uma (CC), delivered assignment from Interpretive Reading, (# 2) Interpreting poetry with 2 poems – “Naming of Cats” by T.S.Elliot and Constantine P. Cavafy’s “RETURN”, a beautiful poem- sensual love remembered and, through that memory, re-experienced. What made it more exciting were the tone and facial expressions that went with the reading. Her assignment was evaluated by Lourdes, DTM.

The 3rd speech was by Sham Sunder (ACB), from the Humorously Speaking manual, #2 – “In Search of Excellence “, evaluated by Ranjit Singh, ACS,CL. Sham Sunder narrated his latest visit to Las Vegas and the surroundings and his observations of the residents.

The evening’s session was evaluated under the coordination of the GE, Reuben, CC, (his first GE role). Reuben had so much to share. Good observations on the evaluations and the reports by the grammarian, ah-counter and the timer.

This evening we had the opportunity to vote for the 3 BEST awards which went to:

BEST TT-Speaker: Daniel (guest), CC, CL

BEST Assignment Speaker: Uma, CC

BEST Evaluator: Ranjit Singh, ACS, CL.

In his concluding remarks, the President reminded the attendees to –

1) Attend the Div G HS/EV contests on Oct 8th and support our contestants in the evaluation contest.

2) Participate in the tall-tale contest, jointly organised by Speakers Dream and TAR college TM clubs, as well as try and organise a similar contest of our own.

The meeting adjourned at 9.48 pm, but the night wasn’t over yet for the BANGSARIANS. We had a date at the cafeteria, to ensure we did justice to the food ordered. We always do, at every meeting, not to mention an opportunity to socialise with the members, for some of us this is the only time to have a conversation with each other.

The meeting started at 7.35 pm, with the SAA, Sham Sunder, ACB, calling the meeting to order. After leading the attendees into reciting the Toastmaster’s Promise, he handed the control to the President, Lourdes Chandramohan, DTM, for the welcome address.

The theme of the meeting, ‘Ask a Stupid Question’, was applied to the introduction of the attendees asking a ‘stupid question’ from any one of the attendees.

The meeting was conducted by yours truly as the Toastmaster of the Evening (TME), starting with the brief history of Toastmasters International and the latest statistics on number of clubs, members and countries with Toastmasters club.

The following role players were introduced: Peter Yeoh (guest) - the Ah-Counter, Uvais - the Grammarian and Anita – the time keeper.

The grammarian introduced the word of the: “Revenant”

The 1st session, Table Topics, was handled by the Table Topics master, Aishah, CC, who spun the topics around the theme, ‘favourites’. The speakers spoke on their ‘favourites’. The following volunteered: Lucky, Peter Yeoh, Uvais and Reuben. Lourdes, DTM, was invited to do the evaluations.

During the break which followed immediately, we celebrated birthdays of September babies, Uvais & Mooi (absent).

After the break, we resumed our meeting with 2 prepared speeches. Patricia K and Ranjani, both delivered project #5 from the basic manual. In the usual Toastmasters fashion, the objectives of the assignment were read out by Lourdes (evaluator), followed by Lucky (GE) reading the notes to the evaluators.

Patricia’s speech title was, ‘My Venus, My Beagle’. Ranjani spoke on ‘Ignorance is bliss’.

President Lourdes presented a module from the Successful Club series – MENTOR.

The 3rd session was the evaluations under the GE. Evaluators, Lourdes & Sham Sunder delivered evaluations of speeches by Patricia & Ranjani, respectively. The reports from the Grammarian (Uvais), Ah-Counter (Peter Yeoh) & the time-keeper (Anita) were readout to complete the evaluation session.

In his general evaluation, the GE emphasized on punctuality among other ways to improve the standards of the meeting.

The BEST Table Topics Speaker award went to guest, PETER YEOH!

During the business session, the President identified the role player for the Area G1 Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contests on Saturday, 24th September. He also reminded members to attend the contests to support our contestants. Although the meeting ended 25 minutes late, it was a fun filled meeting with everyone having a role to play.

Mooi - I made the right choice!

To look smart, presentable and to be able to speak good English, are the key things I am trying to achieve for myself. The reason I want to master public speaking is because I know it is a skill that will help me move ahead in my job and life.

I recall the first time I stepped into the meeting room. It was a shock! Really frightening for me as the majority of members was Indians or Sikhs. I felt insecure! I had put myself in a situation, not knowing what to do next. I tried planning my escape, my heart was pounding fast! I regretted coming!

However, I thought deeply about it. This was no way to behave. My inner voice, from deep inside my soul, told me to stay and watch. At the end of the meeting, I felt this would be the best place for me to overcome my greatest weakness - poor spoken English.

I delivered my “ice-breaker” on 29th July 2008. I could not sleep for a couple of nights before, thinking about it; just because I had to deliver a speech in English. It is not a joke! Finally, I overcame my fear, but it was not an easy task for me.

In fact, at the beginning, I did not really enjoy the meetings, especially if I had promised to give a speech on a particular evening. My whole day would be filled with anxiety and nervousness. Believe me; no one enjoys that type of feeling.

Today, I would like to thank the club members. The first person is Lucky, who was kind enough to take me to shop around and to explore other clubs meetings. It was an eye-opener for me to observe how people delivered their speeches. One thing is for sure, they were passionate about this long journey. From their facial expressions one could see this. I could tell, that time had been essential for them to reach the stage they have reached today; confident about delivering each speech.

During the whole journey, I believe, the most important thing is, to overcome the obstacles which prevent you from improving... It requires a high level of both, self- discipline and self esteem.

I took three years to complete the competent communicator manual; but, I don’t believe it will take me another three years to finish the competent leadership manual. I need to speedy up! No more can I use the excuse of being too busy or too tired to avoid going to a meeting. That will not help me get anywhere!

I would like to thank all the members for their support; especially Lucky, Ranjit, Sham Sunder and Lourdes, They are all great guides for a junior member like me to grow. Further, I really enjoy their speeches. They are very entertaining and informative.

I do hope we can get more members, bring in new blood and have fun at each meeting. It is a place to learn and your experience depends on how you view it, honestly. It is a place where you can build your confidence to stand in front of a crowd and deliver... a speech!

Now, I look forward to each meeting, to meet fellow members, share experiences and fellowship.

They all will be great nights. Again, I thank all the members.

I feel very proud to be a member of The Bangsar Toastmasters Club, which has been here for more than 10 years. I made the right choice of a club for my personal needs and growth.
