It was just another Bangsar TM club meeting. Same ‘regular faces’, same ‘handful members’, doing the same things like we always do, and like always enjoyed doing what we always do!
The enthusiasm was very evident. At 6.30 pm it was just the President. At 6.35 VPE & VPPR were on the scene. At 6.40 SAA walked in, with the Secretary coming in couple of minutes later... they all took their time, slowly walking in. While everyone enjoyed the refreshments they had ordered, 2 of my 4 guests joined the group. Daniel (CC,CL) from Hungary and Roy (looking for a club to join) completed the attendance – 9 members, 2 guests.
Did we have fun? We sure did. Daniel wanted to know how we did it – small numbers, lots of fun. Positive attitude! Good speeches, encouraging evaluations; entertaining table topics; some doing their roles for the first time, some doing multiple roles. Just to remind you, the early birds don’t wait for the late comers. First come first served – if you had volunteered for a role but didn’t arrive before the meeting started, someone will take over the role, and don’t expect to be assigned the role you had volunteered after you walk in. It is taxing, but the show must go on, and no disrupts.
The President, as always added a twist to the introductions – taking advantage of the theme, “MAKE A FRIEND”, everyone had to introduce the member sitting next to. This can be challenging – if you don’t know the members.
Sham Sunder’s table topics were simple, with lots of opportunities to express one-self. The evaluation of the table topics speakers by Mooi Kheng Lim, CC, (her first time) was very precise. She charmed her way through with her smiles.
After a 12-minute-break, we were entertained by 3 speakers:
Anita, (basic manual #2), with “Advantages & Tips of being organised and on time”, evaluated by guest Toastmaster, Daniel. Anita had lots of tips to share.
Uma (CC), delivered assignment from Interpretive Reading, (# 2) Interpreting poetry with 2 poems – “Naming of Cats” by T.S.Elliot and Constantine P. Cavafy’s “RETURN”, a beautiful poem- sensual love remembered and, through that memory, re-experienced. What made it more exciting were the tone and facial expressions that went with the reading. Her assignment was evaluated by Lourdes, DTM.
The 3rd speech was by Sham Sunder (ACB), from the Humorously Speaking manual, #2 – “In Search of Excellence “, evaluated by Ranjit Singh, ACS,CL. Sham Sunder narrated his latest visit to Las Vegas and the surroundings and his observations of the residents.
The evening’s session was evaluated under the coordination of the GE, Reuben, CC, (his first GE role). Reuben had so much to share. Good observations on the evaluations and the reports by the grammarian, ah-counter and the timer.
This evening we had the opportunity to vote for the 3 BEST awards which went to:
BEST TT-Speaker: Daniel (guest), CC, CL
BEST Assignment Speaker: Uma, CC
BEST Evaluator: Ranjit Singh, ACS, CL.
In his concluding remarks, the President reminded the attendees to –
1) Attend the Div G HS/EV contests on Oct 8th and support our contestants in the evaluation contest.
2) Participate in the tall-tale contest, jointly organised by Speakers Dream and TAR college TM clubs, as well as try and organise a similar contest of our own.
The meeting adjourned at 9.48 pm, but the night wasn’t over yet for the BANGSARIANS. We had a date at the cafeteria, to ensure we did justice to the food ordered. We always do, at every meeting, not to mention an opportunity to socialise with the members, for some of us this is the only time to have a conversation with each other.
